Trust
JEREMIAH 17:7-8
7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. (Two things – your trust is in the Lord, but He is also the end of your hope, because as you go along in life, you will realise that there is nothing greater to hope for but the Lord)
8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. (If we can truly meet these conditions of trust and hope in the Lord, then this is what the Lord has promised for us)
Trust
PROVERBS 3:5-10
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
7 ¶ Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
**There are many great promises of security and prosperity promised to us when we can truly meet the qualifications of trusting in the Lord.
*Trusting in the Lord brings to us many benefits; it also causes us to have a peace of mind and heart which is also very good for our mental health (especially in these days that we are living in). If we can truly learn to trust in the Lord, then it will bring us a great rest and a peace that others do not have.
The Bible meaning of the word “Trust” = to have confidence, be confident, to be bold, to be secure
Dictionary meaning of “trust” = firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something.
PROVERBS 29:25
25 ¶ The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.
People put their trust in many things in life. People often put their trust in politicians only to be let down.
People will often trust in something for their entire life only to find that it completely fails them at the end, like some retirement insurance fund, or some government scheme that when they get to the end of their life it fails them.

72 Oh, as we've often sang that old song:
How easy while sailing the sea, and it's calm,
To trust in the strength of Jehovah's great arm.
But, oh, let the waves begin to blow, let--let the wind blow and whip up the waves, then what do you do?
73 Something like I was told, one time, that a lady said. Back in the horse and buggy days, that said the horse run away with her, going from church. Said, "What'd you do?"
74 Said, "I trusted the Lord until the lines broke." Well, that's the time to trust the Lord, after every... after the lines is broke. You're trusting in the lines until they're broke. Yes.
PSALM 118:8
8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
It is amazing to realise that most people (sometimes even ourselves at times) will have more trust in just about anything but the Lord, so we want to look at why that is – there must be a good reason for this??
***Trust is a subconscious thing that you learn – you learn to put your trust in your ability to do your work and earn a living, you learn to put your trust in your financial position if you have wealth, you learn to put your trust in people that you believe in and know well, and all those things are ok to a point, but all those things can easily and many times fail us and will almost certainly fail, especially in hard times.
PROVERBS 28:25-26
25 ¶ He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. (“fat” = to become prosperous)
26 ¶ He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
** *Trust is mostly a thing that we learn subconsciously – we learn to put our trust in things.
- You learn to trust in your car starting in the morning before you leave home for work.
- You learn to trust your oven when cooking certain types of foods at certain temperatures for certain lengths of time.
- We learn to trust the elevator in the mall to take us up to the next floor;
- We learn that we can trust certain people, we learn to trust in many many things, so why do we often have so much trouble to trust in the Lord, yet He is the only absolute sure thing that can and should put our full trust in first?
***The reason is in that we lean to our own understanding in that we already have our own preconceived ideas of what God should do in order to help us in any given situation; but because his thoughts and ways are so much higher than ours, he will almost always do things different to how we think things should go for us, and so because of that we tend to subconsciously “learn” not to trust him to much because we feel that He often lets us down (according to what we think) after that we have tried our best to put our trust in Him.
PROVERBS 3:5-7
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (it is our own understanding that we lean on that gets us into all the trouble. It is because we have a definite preconceived belief of what God should do in order to “fix” our problem in any given situation – but his way of deliverance and bringing us into blessing and prosperity is far greater and far higher that what we could ever think of – in other words, His pathway for our success is a far better one than our pathway to success, in fact, our pathway of what we think will lead us to success, in most cases leads us straight into failure)
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
7 ¶ Be not wise in thine own eyes:
***Being wise in our own eyes is what causes us to subconsciously “learn” not to put our trust the Lord. It is because our expectations of the pathway are so different to the path that he has planned for our lives, and because we are trying to trust him to make things happen in the way that we think they should happen in what our own wisdom dictates to us, then when things don’t go according to our idea of how we think it should be, then we think that the Lord has failed us, and so why then should we put too much trust in him when it seems like over and over again he lets us down!!
PROVERBS 3:5
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
These two must always go together or you will subconsciously learn not to put your trust in the Lord first.
If you try to trust in the Lord and then hold on to your understanding, then over time it will actually destroy your trust in the Lord because his ways and thoughts are much higher than yours.
PSALM 37:5
5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
The life of Joseph is a good example of trust.
We all know the story of Joseph well.
Firstly God gives Joseph two dreams that he would become a great person and that people would bow down to him – and so no doubt he “trusted” the Lord to bring that to pass because it was the Lord that gave him the promise of that at the beginning.
But then for many years things seemed to all go wrong for Joseph, it seemed like the more he trusted the Lord, the worse things got – what was the use of it.
All the times that he had tried to trust in the Lord to bring him into victory, it seemed to go the opposite to how he thought things should have gone according to his understanding – but all along God was leading him in the right pathway to the promise, but it was a pathway that was far higher than what Joseph could have ever thought of at the beginning – and so is it also with our lives because God never changes the way he deals with people because he’s the same yesterday, today, and forever.
GENESIS 37:5-9
5 ¶ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.
6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
So as life went on for Joseph, it seemed like that every time he trusted the Lord, then God’s promise to bring him into prosperity and blessing became more distanced from him – so as he went along on his journey in life, his trust in the leadership of the Lord many times may have appeared to him a failure. And so this is why many people in Life come to a place where they “learn” over time not to put too much trust in the Lord, or at least leave him to the very last hope when there is absolutely nothing else left to trust in.
ISAIAH 26:3-4
3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:
So how do we truly “Trust in the Lord” – we may try to trust the Lord mentally with our mental will power (especially when things are going bad in our lives), but we all know that that is just a mental condition of you trying to trust because you know that that is what you should do, but that metal condition of you trying to trust is not what fully meets the qualification of trusting in the Lord.
As faith is an unconscious thing, so trust must also become something at a deeper level of the subconscious realm.
***Firstly we must come to realise with certainty that when we put our complete trust in the Lord for everything in life, then things will almost certainly go very different to how we imagine that they should go according to our level of understanding.
LAMENTATIONS 3:21-25 (Jerimiah was going through a hard time – he was lamenting because of all the troubles that he had seen)
21 ¶ This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
22 It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
There are habits that we want to form in life that are scriptural habits, and one of those habits is that we must always remember to commit what we are doing or thinking of doing in life to the Lord so that he can then help us in our thinking concerning these works.
PROVERBS 16:3
3 ¶ Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.
*One day Joshua stopped the sun with the command of his voice – yet this same man made the simple mistake of not seeking the Lord’s wisdom with some people of their enemies, and so therefore his thoughts were not established concerning that situation and he made a terrible mistake.
PSALM 145:18-19
18 The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.
19 He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
God's own character and ability and His wealth in all things, and His desire to help and bless us ought to cause us to rejoice in all of our pathways of life (that are good or bad) because we know that if we truly put our trust in him, then he will bring us safely to our destination.
We know that it is generally the character and the integrity of the person that generates our trust in them, and so before we can really trust in someone; we have to first know them well, and know their character well, so this is why we must come to know the Lord in a very personal way.

LUKE 12:6-7
6 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?
7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
JEREMIAH 29:10-11
10 For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
